Abstract

The main focus of the research and development project "INW" is on developing a new agency for sustainable economy. The INW is a service of the consumers advice centre of the federal state of North-Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and is supported by the German Ministry of research and education. It is acting as a central point for forward-looking sustainable attitude of suppliers and consumers in the cities of Dortmund and Hamm and the region of the county Unna. The INW investigates the potentials of issues like hiring, lending, repairing, or sharing of products and the required services. With a set of measures the INW is driving forward innovative activities of sustainable economy. These activities include a database (www.nutz-bar.de) for suppliers using sustainable strategies to offer and trade their products, a marketing campaign, a concerted action, innovative projects and meetings. By including a great number of partners the project will be firmly established within the region. The Secretariat for Future Studies (SFZ) in Dortmund is the INW´s scientific partner. The main emphasis in research is on surveys of the attitudes of consumers and suppliers towards sustainable behaviour and economy, the evaluation of the INW project, the organisation of the INW and to develop strategies to implement the project within the region.

The INW has been established in Dortmund. In partnership with local consumers advice offices the INW is using the potentials for sustainable economy in the fields of

The main aim of the INW-project is to enable and support a future orientated attitude towards supply, consumption and leisure. Suppliers of commerce, service industry and trade and organisations like employers` associations and business development shall participate to extend convenience orientated supply. Within this process the INW will develop and support pilot schemes to give examples for sustainable economy.

Special strategies of communication will be used to extend consumers behaviour towards new and existing ranges of products, and to initiate and support user communities. Suppliers within the region will be adressed directly to incorporate them into the database. On the other hand, the INW is also striving for intensive cooperation with suppliers.

A concerted action within the region shall stimulate a great number of partners like local and regional administrative bodies, associations, waste economy enterprises, housing associations and communities to create independent schemes giving the project a broad perspective. In the year 2004 30 independent projects shall be run in responsibility of the INW´s partners.
