International Conference in Leipzig,

The regional level is best prepared to implement the
concept of sustainable economic activities. This is the initial hypothesis
of the Research Initiative of the German Ministry for education and research
“Regional approaches to sustainable economy”. Limited in space, economy is
environmental friendly, supports social contacts, and strengthens regional
identity. Consequences of economic activities affect directly the involved
actors. Ideal conditions for a sustainable development?
Objectives
The Conference aims at presenting the Status Quo of
the discussions in the field of regional approaches to sustainability to
international experts. Factors for success as well as necessary framework
conditions will be identified via intensive experience exchange between
researchers, developers and practitioners. The Conference will be an
occasion to make contacts for international research consortiums, and
supports transnational cooperation between projects.
Invited are decision-makers and practitioners from
local, regional and national authorities, international experts, researchers
and further interested persons. Right after the Johannesburg “World Summit
on Sustainable Development”, the Conference will refer to the Summit’s
results and messages.
Projects and research results from European examples
will be presented. These will include the German pilot projects funded
under the above mentioned research initiative of the German Ministry, which
can be subdivided into three topics: Agriculture and regional marketing,
regional substance flow management, and regional sustainability and problem
solving in specific fields.
Elements
Small workshops will
facilitate individual meetings as well as the common development of ideas
and positions. Possibilities to exhibit, as well as discussion fora for
individual projects are foreseen. The Conference will take place in English
language, translation into German will be assured for the plenary only.
